Peruvian shoe companies complain of 80% fall in sales

Mario Mantilla Medina, who is president of an organisation called the commission of small and micro-businesses and co-operatives, said in recent comments to local media that the Peruvian market has been “invaded” by shoes from China and other Asian countries that, he said, are implausibly cheap.
For his part, the president of the footwear industry association in Trujillo, Peru’s most important leather- and shoe-producing region, Richard García, said: “There is uncertainty over how the year is going to end for our member companies. Sales have fallen by 80% this year. The big problem we have is that Chinese shoes are coming onto the Peruvian market at prices that indicate dumping. They’re coming in at prices of between $5 and $6 per pair, whereas the leather shoes we make cost four times that amount.”
