Union leader says Argentina’s shoe sector is becoming “an industrial cemetery”

The secretary general of the SUC footwear workers’ union in Argentina, Agustín Amicone, has said the sector in his country is turning into “an industrial cemetery”.

Mr Amicone made the remarks following the closure of a factory in San Luis province run by shoe manufacturing firm Herzo, which made footwear and accessories for sports brand Puma. After a difficult six months, Herzo closed its doors at the end of November with the loss of 200 jobs.

Speaking at the start of December, Mr Amicone said this took the total number of footwear jobs that Argentina has lost in 2016 to more than 4,000. Herzo had been running for 30 years non-stop, he said, but had shut down this year because of how bad things have become in the domestic market.

He said: “Part of the problem is that there are now too many imported shoes in Argentina. But what’s worse is that domestic footwear consumption has fallen by 30% this year.”
