Oz ruby slippers campaign hits target

An online appeal to raise funds for the restoration of the famous ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, has successfully reached its $300,000 target.

The Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, which launched the campaign on crowdfunding site Kickstarter, said the goal was reached in just a few days thanks to more than 5,300 supporters in over 40 countries.

The funds will go towards the restoration of the slippers as well as the creation of a new display case designed to protect them from further deterioration.

Due to the number of different materials used in the shoes, the Smithsonian must now carry out scientific research to devise an all-round treatment plan, according to a spokesperson for the organisation.
