The French leather sector achieved an increase of 6% in the value of exports of hides, skins and finished leather in the first half of 2016, compared to the same period in 2015. The figures for the first six months of this year show exports of finished bovine leather with a value of €53 million, of finished sheepskin valued at €32 million and calf leather of €33.4 million.

Over the same six-month period, exports of finished leathergoods increased in value by 8% year on year, reaching €2.9 billion. Likewise, footwear exports registered an increase in value of 8% compared to the first half of last year, achieving export revenues of just under €1.5 billion.

On announcing the figures, Frank Boehly, president of industry body the Conseil National du Cuir, said that, although the wider economic situation this year had made life difficult for many businesses, the ‘Made in France’ label, which he described as being synonymous with “exceptional savoir-faire”, is still in high demand overseas, particularly in Asia. “We should encourage and develop this fact so that the French leather industry remains one of the largest in the world, to the benefit of all our companies,” he added.
