Paraguay: local producers of leather shoes are losing out

27/06/2016
INTN, Paraguay’s national training and technology institute, has established a new agreement with footwear manufacturers in the South American country to improve skills and knowledge in the local workforce and boost domestic production.

The announcement came after a local industry body, Cicpar, complained that sales of locally made leather footwear have declined by an estimated 40% in recent years. Cicpar has said the Paraguayan market is being swamped by cheap shoes imported from Asia and that local manufacturers are unable to compete with prices that the organisation claims are falsely low.

Cicpar president, Elder Otazo, said in recent comments that 30 million pairs of cheap, Asian-made shoes came into Paraguay in 2015. “We need to impose quality controls on importers,” he added.
