Mexican industry mourns one of its 1930s pioneers

The leather and footwear industry in Mexico is mourning the loss of one of the pioneers of its modernisation and industrialisation, Salvador Sánchez Negrete, who has died in León at the age of 90.

Mr Sánchez Negrete founded children’s footwear company Calzado Chavita in 1939 and then diversified production into safety boots and shoes with the brand Berrendo. He is accredited by many as one of the prime movers behind the transition of the footwear industry in and around León from a traditional, artisanal, craft-based sector into a modern industry.

Tanners and rival footwear manufacturers from all parts of Mexico have spoken of his commitment to the industry, to making quality products and, above all, to his family.

Many of Salvador Sánchez Negrete’s 11 children followed him into the business and still run the company today.
