Colombian industry body prepares new antidumping request

One of the reasons local manufacturers will increase their share, the organisation has said, is that it is preparing to ask the Colombian government to put new antidumping measures in place against falsely cheap imports.
Acicam president, Luis Gustavo Flórez, said in recent comments to local media that the market at the moment is divided 50-50 between Colombian-made and imported shoes. However, he insisted that around 30% of imported footwear, which constitutes 14 million pairs per year (putting the total size of the Colombian market at 93 million pairs, just under two pairs per capita, per year), is coming into the country at below market rates.
Mr Flórez said dumping is widespread, in spite of a tariff regime the government in Bogotá has put in place. He also spoke out about triangulation, in which low-price shoes made in Asia, notably China, are coming into Colombia with a false label of origin from third countries, “countries with which Colombia has trade agreements in place”.
He said: “The industry in Colombia is well equipped to compete, but only if the competition is fair.”
