Footwear amendment included in National Defence Authorisation act
17/05/2016
The amendment was proposed by Senator Angus King, a member of the committee, and will be included in the 2017 National Defence Authorisation Act. It would bring athletic footwear in line with the 1941 Berry Amendment, which requires boots and apparel provided to US troops to be American-made.
Senator King said that the provision “will support domestic manufacturing, protect jobs for dedicated American workers, including hundreds in Maine, and help ensure that American troops are equipped and outfitted with high-quality uniform items made in the United States.”
Among the first to react to the news was sportswear brand New Balance who described it as “a great opportunity” and said it was “overjoyed by the outcome”.
