Ziylan sees the rise of Turkish-made shoes
More and more of the shoes on sale in footwear stores in Turkey are being produced locally, according to the chief executive of one of the country’s most important footwear retail groups.

In recent comments to local media, Burak Ovun, chief executive of the Ziylan Footwear Group, said he calculates that 60% of the 160 million pairs sold in footwear stores in Turkey in 2015 were Turkish-made and 40% imported.

He said he predicts a similar split in 2016 and that, in the following years, domestically manufactured shoes will command an even greater share of the Turkish market. He said local producers were benefiting from government-imposed restrictions on low-quality footwear imports, which began in 2014.

Ziylan itself sold 18 million pairs in Turkey in 2015 and, Mr Ovun believes, is on course to increase this to 22 million pairs in 2016. The group has almost 400 stores across Turkey, under its Flo, Polaris and Sport in Street brands.

It acquired Italian footwear brand Lumberjack in 2012 and, in April 2016, announced it had acquired major German footwear company HR Group, which runs the 530-store Reno retail chain.
