Footwear a possible market for new fruit-derived plastic

The developers of a new plastic bottle have said footwear is one of the potential markets they have identified for the material.

Representatives of the fruit juice industry in Spain have worked with Valencia-based technology centre Ainia to make a new bottle bio-derived and biodegradable plastic. In this instance, the raw material for the plastic is polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), a polymer formed from waste material from fruit juice production.

Ainia and representatives of the juice industry presented a bottle made from PHB on April 19, using it as a container for, naturally enough, fruit juice. However, they said immediately that they see a variety of uses for the new bio-plastic, including in the footwear and automotive industries.
