Turkey’s footwear trade deficit narrows

29/02/2016
Footwear imports into Turkey continue to have a substantially higher value than the country’s footwear exports, but its trade-deficit in shoes is narrowing.

In 2014 Turkish footwear manufacturers exported $720 million worth of shoes, while retailers and wholesalers brought footwear valued at $954 million into the country from overseas. Imports, therefore, were more than 30% higher in value than exports.

In 2015, the value of footwear exports fell by more than 7% to $672 million, while the value of imports also fell (by 16.8%) to reach $794 million. Last year, then, the gap between imports and exports narrowed to 18%.

Commentators in Turkey have said that at least 80% of footwear imports are cheap athletic shoes made from synthetic materials.
