Ackerman repeats papal footwear feat

Guanajuato-based high-end footwear brand Ackerman had to work fast to repeat for Pope Francis a footwear feat it put in place when his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, visited Mexico in 2012.

Ackerman owner, Armando Martín Dueñas, has told local media that because a gift of handmade loafers for Pope Benedict went down so well, the company decided upon learning of Pope Francis’s intention to visit Mexico to repeat the gesture. Initial expectations were that the papal visit would be in the second half of this year but news came through in December that instead the visit would take place from February 12-18.

“This meant we had to bring forward all the work we had to put in to making shoes for Pope Francis,” Mr Martín Dueñas said as the visit got under way. Nevertheless, two pairs of handmade black shoes were ready on time, one with leather soles and one made to be especially lightweight.

In both cases the uppers are in lambskin; a total of 57 people had a hand in making them.
