Flyknit “created a revolution”, Nike executive says

Nike executive Samy Vaikundamani has said the company’s Flyknit technology for knitted footwear uppers “has created a revolution around the entire footwear industry” since its introduction in 2012. Mr Vaikundamani has only been at Nike for five months, but he spoke on the company’s behalf at the 2016 UITIC Congress in Chennai at the start of February.

He told delegates that the trigger for Flyknit had come from athletes. “When they are engaged with their sport, they don’t want to think about shoes,” he said. “They want to concentrate on their performance. They also wanted us to make their shoes lighter and act like a second skin on their feet, without the need for socks.”

He described Flyknit as “true innovation” because the upper consists of only one component rather than the 30or 40 you might find on other shoes. He claimed that Flyknit reduces weight by between 30% and 40%, lowers labour costs by 50% and waste by up to 80%, mostly through the avoidance of cutting waste, part of the benefit of having a single-piece upper.
