Regional chairman of the Council for Leather Exports (CLE) in south-east India, Aqeel Ahmed, has said the nineteenth UITIC Congress, taking place in Chennai from February 3-5, is on course to be one of the biggest events in CLE history.

Demand for places has been such that 568 delegates have registered to attend in all, said Mr Ahmed at a pre-event press conference in Chennai on February 2. Of these 180 will be visitors from overseas, representing 28 different countries in all. The event is co-organised by UITIC (the International Union of Shoe Industry Technicians) and by CLE.

UITIC president and chief executive of Lyon-based testing and research institute CTC, Yves Morin, said at the same press conference that he was looking forward to discussions at the conference about  the footwear factory of the future, which is the event’s main theme. He said: “The world is changing faster than ever and the factories of tomorrow will be very different from what we have in place today.” He added that only “connected companies” will be successful in the footwear industry of the future.
