Multi-stakeholder body the Leather Working Group (LWG) has now audited 220 tanneries around the world for aspects of their environmental performance, including water- and energy-use.

Speaking at the January seminar his company organised to discuss restricted substance management in the leather industry, the vice-president for innovation and industry relations at Lanxess, Dr Dietrich Tegtmeyer, said that 23% of the world’s shoe upper production, by volume, has come under the scrutiny of the LWG in the ten years or so since the group was founded.
