As a result of a joint research project, the footwear industry in Ecuador has constructed a new, national safety boot, which has won the backing of the country’s ministry of industry and productivity. The government has said the new footwear will help Ecuador reduce he $60 million it is currently spending each year on imported safety shoes and boots.

The new product, made entirely with Ecuadorean materials, has water-resistant leather in the upper, an electrical-resistant sole and and enforced toe.

Government minister Emilio Velasco said at the launch of the new safety footwear in mid-January that it should serve as an example to other industries. “It’s good news because the industry has shown high levels of innovation, trust, technology-transfer and joint working,” he said.
