Texas-based footwear manufacturer celebrates 40 years

Texas-based San Antonio Shoemakers is celebrating its fortieth anniversary in 2016. The company was set up in 1976 when co-founders Terry Armstrong and Lew Hayden set out to counter what they identified then as “a national trend of diminishing quality and cheap foreign manufacturing”.

Today, the company still makes handcrafted shoes in Texas “with the very best materials available” in 88 sizes for women and 104 sizes for men. It says it has “an obsession with fit and quality”.

Its shoes are carried in more than 200 own-brand stores and in retailers across the US, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Korea, Kuwait, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Panama, Chile, Israel, and the UK. It continues to be a family-owned enterprise and describes itself as “a humble American success story”.

As part of its anniversary celebrations, San Antonio Shoemakers will re-introduce a series of popular heritage shoes as limited-edition releases this year.

“This year, we look back on 40 years of growth and success,” said chief executive, Nancy Richardson, in early January. “What we do is all about comfort, and the SAS family couldn’t be happier we have been able to bring that comfort to so many people for 40 years.”
