Another Menorca shoe producer to close its doors

A well known footwear producer from the island of Menorca, Roseta, has announced it is to close down. Parent company, Jaime Pons Sintes SL, said at the end of December that a customer had failed to pay for an order and had left it with no choice but to close; 16 employees are in line to lose their jobs.

Footwear production has long been one of the mainstays of industry in Menorca but a number of producers have closed down since the economic downturn that began in 2008. Others that have been unable to continue include Zapatillas Alaior, Gomila Melià and Creaciones Freehand.

The local footwear manufacturing association has said it will hold an assembly meeting on February 10 to discuss the state of the industry there.
