ZDHC includes leather chemicals in new MRSL

10/12/2015
The Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) programme has extended its Manufacturing Restricted Substances List (MRSL) to include for the first time chemical formulations and substances that it wants companies involved in leather production to be aware of and avoid.

ZDHC formed as a coalition of six brands and retailers (H&M, Puma, Nike, C&A, Li-Ning and adidas) in 2011 following a campaign against hazardous chemicals in clothing and footwear by Greenpeace. It now has a total of 26 brands and organisations as signed-up supporters.

It has had an MRSL in place for textiles for some time but announced earlier this year that it would work with multi-stakeholder body the Leather Working Group to review the textiles list and adapt it for the leather industry. The new version, published on December 9, includes this update.
