School shoe programme remains in place in Nicaragua

Around 50 small and medium-sized footwear manufacturers in Nicaragua are currently involved in an ongoing programme to provide poorer children across the country with school shoes, paid for by the government.

In 2016, these manufacturers will produce around 600,000 pairs of school shoes with leather uppers for the programme, a much higher total than in previous years, when the government had to bring in some of the shoes from outside the country.

Alejandro Delgado, president of small businesses body Conimipyme, recently told media in Nicaragua that the 50 shoe producers involved in the programme were even able to hold prices steady for 2016 owing to lower leather prices.
