Fears for footwear jobs in Argentina if the market becomes ‘free’

A second round of voting takes place on November 22; Mr Macri is up against former vice-president, Daniel Scioli.
CIMAC president, Ariel Aguilar, has said his member companies are afraid of the possible consequences of a win for Mr Macri, who has talked extensively about liberalising Argentina’s economy during the campaign.
According to Mr Aguilar, major retail groups have cancelled orders for Argentinean-made shoes for 2016, with manufacturers being told that their customers want to wait and see what happens in the election.
Mr Aguilar has said his members are afraid of a return to early times, when the domestic market was over-run by imports. He pointed out that in 2003 Argentinean consumers bought 36 million pairs of shoes and boots, with 80% of them coming from outside the country. “These days, we are selling 120 million pairs,” he added, “with 80% of them produced in our factories.”
