An official body that monitors salary levels in the Dominican Republic, the National Salary Committee, said in response to the announcement that it was to the credit both of employers and employees that the salary increase had come about as the result of a mutual agreement. The committee’s director, Félix Hidalgo, said at a press conference to announce the agreement that this mutual understanding was of great importance for “labour peace” (the opposite of labour unrest) in the Dominican Republic.
At the end of 2014, there were 60 Free Zones in total in the Dominican Republic, employing more than 150,000 people. They achieved export earnings in 2014 of $5.2 billion. There are plans for substantial further growth, to keep attracting manufacturing firms to the country and to create hundreds of thousands of new jobs.
Companies operating in free zones in the Dominican Republic at the moment include around 30 footwear and footwear component manufacturers and three tanners.
