Nicaragua wants to compete in the global leather market

Further indications of growth in the leather sector in Nicaragua have come in comments from an industry leader there about the Central American country’s third city, Masaya.

Speaking to local media at the end of September, the president of national industry association CNCC, Silvio Fuentes, said member companies in Masaya were producing (mostly using artisanal methods) on average 30,000 pairs of leather shoes per month, supplying the men’s, women’s, children’s and workwear markets. He said these producers were now consuming 1.5 million square-feet of finished leather per year. “And that’s just in the city of Masaya,” he insisted.

“Working with leather and footwear is a very noble line of work,” Mr Fuentes said, “but CNCC is striving to give people the knowledge and skills they need and reviewing the manufacturing processes companies have in place to help them become more productive and more competitive. Leather and footwear can help improve the image of Nicaragua; we can compete in the international arena.”

An EU funding programme is in place offering investment of more than €20 million to help manufacturing companies in Nicaragua and throughout Central America to build up knowledge and skills in their organisations. Leather is one of six industries earmarked for funding, with Nicaragua’s leather industry a special focus.
