The shoes that should last 35 years

Artisan footwear producers at the JM Weston factory just outside Limoges in south-west France insist that a pair of the shoes they make for the luxury brand ought to last their owners at least 35 years.

In a recent feature in Belgian newspaper Le Soir, JM Weston workers said wearers only have to take the shoes into any of the brand’s shops (it has a presence in eight cities in France and in 14 countries around the world) to request resoling. From there, the shoes make their way to Limoges for the team to go to work.

Workers said it was not unusual for a pair to come back for resoling five or six times, meaning the same pair can last its owner for as long as 35 years.

JM Weston shoes are made from vegetable-tanned leather, sourced from the Bastin tannery in Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat, 25 kilometres east of Limoges. The tannery was founded in 1806 but was acquired by JM Weston in 1981.
