A government minister in the Dominican Republic, José Ramón Peralta, has said the footwear industry has created 11,000 new jobs there in the last five years.

He said that in the course of the next five years, the industry will need to recruit a further 32,000 people to keep pace with growth and that experts in footwear manufacturing from Taiwan were currently in the Dominican Republic to deliver a programme aimed at training trainers, who will then pass shoemaking skills on to new employees.

Addressing a meeting of footwear industry representatives in mid-September, Mr Peralta went on to say that, in 2014, footwear manufacturers in the Dominican Republic had exported a total 14.7 million pairs of shoes and boots.
