Footwear and leather industry must not under-estimate its boost to EU economy

The second seminar in the programme ‘A Future For European Leather’ took place in Paris on June 19, co-hosted by the leather industry’s representative body in the European Union (EU), COTANCE, and its “social dialogue” partner, trade union organisation industriAll-EU.

Social and societal issues provided the theme for the Paris event, which followed a first seminar in Bucharest in April and preceded two further seminars in the programme, in Portugal in October and in the UK in December.

A round-up event will then take place in Brussels in the early part of 2016. Capturing all of the main points from each of the seminars, the Brussels event will culminate in a “manifesto” in which the European leather industry will present its needs for the period up to 2025 to the European Commission.

COTANCE president, Jonathan Muirhead, opened the seminar by pointing out that, in the leather and footwear sector in the EU, there is a contribution of €80,000 in turnover per employee each year. “It’s true that the industry is made up of many small companies,” Mr Muirhead, who is also chairman of the Scottish Leather Group, said in his address, “but we should not underestimate the importance of our industry to the European economy.”
