Politician to take over as president of FICE

Spain’s footwear manufacturers’ association FICE has decided to appoint a regional government minister as its new executive president.

José Monzonís has been the vice-minister for industry and energy in Valencia’s regional government from December 2012 until now. His term of office will finish at the end of June.

FICE has announced that Mr Monzonís will take over the running of the organisation in the autumn, after spending the summer months familiarising himself with the footwear industry. His appointment has still to receive the formal approval of FICE’s general assembly, but the organisation clearly believes this is a formality and has said it will employ him from July 1.

Acting president, José Juan Sanchís, said on announcing the development that he wanted to concentrate on his own footwear business (he is the founder and creative director of high-end women’s shoe brand Rebeca Sanver). He insisted Mr Monzonís has had plenty of contact with the footwear industry during his time in the regional government. “He has even represented us at a number of meetings in Brussels,” he said, “which is somewhere we really need to increase our profile.”
