Peru: shoe production declines in main leather cluster

19/05/2015
Local industry leaders in Peru’s principal leather and leathergoods cluster, El Porvenir, have said shoe production in the area declined steeply.

Speaking to local media, the president of the local leather and shoe association, Vladimir de la Roca, said annual production, which had been steady at around 30 million pairs per year in El Porvenir, fell by around 8 million pairs in 2014.

He said that there are around 2,000 footwear producers in the area, but that 60% of them work “informally”. Mr de la Roca said fierce competition from Chinese imports was hurting his member companies and added that his association has long campaigned for the government to help them. “For example, we have been asking the government for a long time to stop Peruvian leather and raw material from leaving the country as easily as it does at the moment, but the government has done nothing about this.”
