More optimistic outlook for leather shoes in 2016

11/05/2015
Leatherbiz columnist David Peters has said in his blog entry for May that lower prices for raw material are allowing tanners to offer mainstream footwear manufacturers attractively priced finished leather again.

According to Mr Peters, a bull market for US hides (with high prices for sellers), which he says began in June 2009, ended in September 2014. He says in the May column, which has the title ‘Revolution’, that prices in the US have fallen since then by around 15% and that he is confident they have around another 15% still to fall.

As a result, he says finished leather prices “are now drifting into the re-contenting range”, meaning that they are slowly becoming affordable enough for footwear manufacturers that decided to replace leather with cheaper substitute materials in previous seasons to start to think about putting leather  back into their material mixes. In his estimation, therefore, 2016 looks optimistic for leather shoes.

“We should begin to see the first steps towards this during the latter part of this summer,” Mr Peters says in his column, “as designers and their purchasing departments begin to include a greater amount of leather in their shoe catalogues.”
