New $600m factory for Nike supplier in Indonesia

30/04/2015
Reports from Indonesia say Industry Minister Saleh Husin has inaugurated a $600 million shoe factory in Garut, West Java, which will produce for Nike.

The factory has an annual production capacity of 15 million pairs and will provide employment to 5,500 people.

In 2014, Indonesia exported $4.1 billion worth of footwear, according to a press release, up 6.4% from the preceding year. However, this fell short of its $5 billion target.

The country is aiming to diversify its foreign exchange earnings away from oil and gas but the footwear sector has been impacted by strikes and unrest in recent years.
