Turkish partnership makes Kazakhstan shoe start-up possible

An entrepreneur in Kazakhstan, Sanzhar Tlepov, has announced he intends to begin producing shoes for the domestic market in the country’s third-biggest city, Shymkent.

A factory Mr Tlepov already runs in the town employs 15 people and produces house-slippers, but he has invested in new machinery and has set up a partnership with a footwear producer in Turkey and has said he intends to start producing at least 100,000 pairs of shoes a year for the domestic market.

To begin with, Mr Tlepov will bring semi-finished shoes into Kazakhstan and finish them there. He plans to have this set-up in place during the summer of 2015. “If we reach the goal of 100,000 pairs per year, we can continue to expand beyond that,” he said in recent comments to local media.

His idea is of the moment: the government of Kazakhstan launched a new programme in February 2015 to encourage consumers there to buy locally made products.
