US: FDRA praises TPA introduction

The introduction of a trade promotion authority bill (TPA) in Congress last week means the US is one step closer to agreement on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), according to the Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America (FDRA) association, which counts Nike, Puma and Skechers among members.

Its president, Matt Priest, said: "TPA is vital to finalising and passing the TPP, a free trade agreement that has the potential to save the footwear industry and American consumers hundreds of millions of dollars a year in costs. That is why this is a top priority for our members and why FDRA will continue to lead the charge with congressional leaders to explain how important this initiative is for footwear companies and consumers.”

When asked about TPA’s prospects, Mr Priest added: “In our meetings on the Hill, we have heard from Members who are very supportive of our position, and I know we have some great advocates in Congress for our industry. I am positive we will see this passed, hopefully clearing the way for the conclusion of TPP negotiations soon thereafter.”
