Shoe value the only bright spot for Pakistan’s leather sector

Pakistan’s leather exports decreased in value in the first eight months of the current financial year.

In the period between July 2014 and February 2015, tanners in Pakistan exported 14.9 million square-metres of finished leather, brining in export revenues of $352 million. These figures represent a year-on-year decline in volume of 18.5% and a fall in value of just over 3%.

Similarly, exports in finished leather products, including garments, fell in value by 4.8%, bringing in $412.6 million in the first eight months of the current financial year. And leather footwear exports fell by 7.9% in volume to 8.9 million pairs. However, the value of the country’s footwear exports increased by 18.7% over the period to reach $89.4 million.

In this way, the average export price per pair of Pakistan’s leather footwear increased from $7.76 in the first eight months of financial year 2013-2014 to $10.05.
