The European Confederation of the Footwear Industry (CEC) has underlined a “general positive evolution” in the European footwear industry in recent years in terms of employment, with “no drastic jobs losses” between 2009 and 2013, despite the global economic crisis.

At a meeting in Paris at the end of March, CEC highlighted encouraging production figures, showing an inrease in volume of 11% and an increase in value of 25% between 2009 and 2013. In 2013, footwear producers in the European Union manufactured 470.6 million pairs of shoes, with a value that CEC put at €11.2 billion.

Over the same period, exports of shoes to countries outside the European Union increased by 46% in volume and by 73% in value. Exports in 2013 reached 223.2 million pairs with a value of €7.3 billion.
