India’s Council for Leather Exports (CLE) has put the value of the country’s domestic footwear market at $3.25 billion per year.

During a press conference in Hong Kong on March 30 to promote the UITIC Congress in Chennai in February 2016, CLE executive director, Ramesh Kumar, said the current rate of consumption of shoes in India was just over 2.3 billion pairs per year, the equivalent of each person buying 1.8 pairs of shoes.

“We expect a huge boom in footwear,” Mr Kumar said, “with consumption rates rising to four pairs per person per year by 2020.” This would put the Indian footwear market at over 5 billion pairs per year if the population stays constant.
