Leather and shoes lead to job growth in Elche

31/03/2015
The health of the Spanish footwear industry has had a powerful impact on the economy of Elche, the country’s most important shoe producing area.

Recent figures have shown that unemployment in Elche fell by 10% last year and the city now has its lowest level of unemployment in five years.

Statistics show that leather and footwear production have made an important contribution to this,  registering more than 8,300 new jobs in 2014, a share of around 80% of all industrial job growth.  Shoes and leather now make up 66% of all industrial employment in the area.
