Another Italian footwear producer is to close down

The company, based in Alessandria in Piemonte in northern Italy, said the effects of the long economic downturn had proved too difficult to overcome.
L’Alexandria was founded in 1945 by Sebastiano Camagna, whose family continued the business. His son, Elio, was responsible for expanding into overseas markets and, at one point, became the president of ANCI, the former name of Italian footwear industry association Assocalzaturifici. In turn, his children, Paolo and Marina, took over and are still in charge today.
Commentators have said L’Alexandria may have become too dependent on exports to the Russian market.
It was producing around 1,000 pairs per day at a site covering 9,000 square-metres. It was the last remaining large-scale shoe producer in the province of Alessandria.
