Nicaraguan producers cannot meet school-shoe demand

In comments at the start of 2015, Alejandro Delgado, president of small business association Conimipyme, said a government plan to provide pupils in Nicaragua’s poorest schools with shoes, uniforms and schoolbags was good news for footwear producers. But he said Nicaragua’s own shoe industry was unlikely to be able to supply more than 40,000 pairs out of an estimated total of the volume required of 340,000 pairs.
Mr Delgado said Nicaraguan footwear companies were determined to increase year on year their contribution to the total so that, in years to come, no imported shoes will be needed to fulfil the government’s need.
He said: “It’s not that I want to speak ill of the competition, but products that have come in from outside the country to help meet our school needs in previous years have left a lot to be desired in terms of quality. In the case of the shoes, they were imported from China.”
