Stark figures for decline in Argentina’s shoe exports

Argentina’s footwear manufacturers have registered declines in exports in the last few years and are afraid the situation may become even more difficult for them. They have complained that too much Argentinean leather is being shipped overseas leaving competitors in other countries to make money from the country’s raw material by adding value to it outside Argentina.

Industry association CIMA has confirmed that its members companies’ export figures have been in decline for some time. In 2012, Argentinean shoe companies exported more than 8.7 million pairs, earning $36.6 million. These figures declined in 2013 by more than 30% in volume and by 21% in value.

Confirmed figures for the first quarter of 2014 show further falls. During that three-month period, Argentina exported almost 1.4 million pairs of shoes, earning revenues of just over $6 million. Compared to the same quarter in 2013, these figures represent declines of 22.4% in volume and of 19.9% in value.
