William Wong says efficient supply chain gives Chinese shoes an advantage

China’s footwear industry has increased its investment in materials, including leather, by 20% since 2008 in an attempt to increase quality.

Vice-president of the Hong Kong Footwear Association, William Wong, revealed this figure during comments he made at the Fifth World Footwear Congress in León, Mexico, at the end of November.

Mr Wong, who is also the founder and chief executive of a retailer called Italian Fashion Galleria, which specialises in selling high-end shoes and boots made in Italy to Chinese consumers, said rising labour costs mean Chinese-made shoes have increased substantially in price.

But he argued that, if leather shoes from China are still cheaper than shoes made in many other countries, it’s not because the manufacturers are using cheap materials. He said that China’s footwear supply chain is very efficient. “Labour costs have gone up,” he said, “but the supply chain is very well organised.”
