Dr Anna Sobczak, the policy officer with specific responsibility for the EU’s leather-sector industries, revealed the figures at a recent seminar in Bucharest.
Quoting figures for 2013 from the EU’s official statistics body, Eurostat, she said Italy’s tanning industry had produced finished leather worth just over €1 billion. Spain was a distant second with a value of €129 million, followed by Germany, the UK and France, with figures of €116 million, €83 million and €81 million respectively.
For bags and luggage made from leather, Italy achieved a value of €1.6 billion, but in this category, France ran its neighbour relatively close, with more than €1.2 billion. There was then a large gap to the UK in third with €170 million, Germany with €166 million and Spain with €146 million.
Italy was also the runaway leader in footwear, with its 2013 output valued at almost €3.1 billion. Spain was, again, second with €644 million, followed by Portugal with €590 million and Germany with €440 million.
Dr Sobczak was then able to please the local audience in Bucharest by confirming that fifth place in the top five footwear producers in the EU by value in 2013 was Romania, which produced shoes worth €319 million.
