Mexico’s footwear import controls may have come just in time

Footwear exports into Mexico increased by almost 30% in the first eight months of this year compared to the same period in 2013.

Official customs statistics show that a total of 71 million pairs of shoes came into Mexico between January and August 2014, with 90% of the total coming from China, Vietnam or Indonesia.

Further analysis of the figures shows that Mexico imported more shoes from China, almost 44 million pairs, in the first eight months of this year than it did in the whole of 2013.

Measures to control imports came into effect on October 1, but industry observers calculate that the total number of shoes brought into Mexico from overseas in 2014 will be around 100 million pairs, which is one-third of the total Mexico consumes each year.
