Ex-Bocconi students insist shoes were the best idea for a start-up
The founders of Scarosso, a German-owned footwear brand specialising in shoes handmade in Italy, have told the Financial Times that they decided to launch a footwear start-up rather than a venture in any other part of the fashion industry because it is “a narrower niche” and required less initial investment.

Founded in Milan in 2010 by two German MBA students who met at the Bocconi University, Moritz Offney and Marco Reiter, Scarosso’s aim is to make high-quality shoes handmade in Italy available at affordable prices.

Its shoes are made by artisans in Montegranaro in Le Marche, Italy’s most prominent footwear-manufacturing region. Men’s styles start at around €200 per pair.

Soles, linings and uppers are made from Italian leather, which Scarosso sources from Milan-based tanning group Bonaudo. The brand has six boutiques in all, in Berlin, Hamburg, Vienna and Frankfurt, but says most of its sales are online.

In recent comments to the Financial Times, the company said it had worked out that 80% of its customers are men aged between 30 and 35.
