Fashion designer Óscar de la Renta, who died on October 20 at the age of 82, was late to turn his hand to shoes, but will be missed by the entire fashion industry. He had been suffering from cancer, his family said.

Originally from the Dominican Republic, Mr de la Renta travelled to Spain as a young man to study art. He began working in Madrid with Cristóbal Balenciaga before moving to Paris to work with Antonio del Castillo at luxury brand Lanvin at the start of the 1960s.

He set up his own brand in New York in 1965 but waited until 2011 to launch an accessories collection, choosing ostrich, alligator and other exotic materials to make shoes as well as bags, belts and jewellery.
