Callaghan aims to put a spring in wearers’ step
Spanish footwear manufacturer Hergar has launched a new design for men called Up, in which there is no heel, just a gap between the sole and the upper at the back of the shoe, creating a shape reminiscent of the open mouth of a fish.

Up shoes have already gone on sale as part of the current collection of the company’s Callaghan brand.

Presenting the idea at the company’s headquarters in Arnedo, La Rioja, Hergar chief executive, Basilio García, explained that it was the work of his in-house team of 14 designers and that his company has applied for the relevant patents. “I don’t think anyone will find it easy to copy in any case,” he warned, “because it’s very complicated.”

He said the basic idea is to have a shoe in which the sole adapts to the physical change that takes place when we put our feet on the ground while walking. Mr García calculates that the average foot widens by about eight millimetres on impact and that the design of Up will make this impact easier for the heel to cope with.
