Lack of progress puts Trujillo footwear and leather park in doubt

Industry commentators in Peru have said a plan to set up a new footwear and leather industrial park near Trujillo, first announced four years ago, are in danger of coming to nothing.

The authorities in the district of El Porvenir said in 2010 that they had won government approval for a project to set up footwear production units and tanneries in the new industrial park, on a piece of land covering more than 100 hectares.

Footwear makers and tanners have invested in plots of land at the site, often buying them from third-party agencies, but construction has been impeded by families building makeshift homes there. Observers have said that around 30% of the site is now taken up by around 600 families and that the authorities in El Porvenir have done nothing to resolve the matter.

In recent comments, the president of the local leather and footwear industry association, Edmundo Blas Zegarra, said he was still fighting for the project, but he warned that if the authorities make no progress in the coming months, the chances are that the project will never get off the ground.
