Guatemala: local shoe producers are meeting only 30% of market demand

Guatemala’s national footwear association has said local manufacturers are supplying only 30% of the shoes consumers in the country buy each year.

In recent comments to local media, the association’s president, Bayron Almorza, said people in Guatemala are currently buying 45 million pairs of shoes a year, around 2.8 pairs per person on average. However, he said the country’s shoe manufacturers are currently providing only 30% of this total, around 13.5 million pairs a year.

Mr Almorza said the domestic footwear sector had suffered because a substantial proportion of the remaining 70% of shoes sold in Guatemala each year are coming into the country illegally. This has caused a fall in sales and the loss of jobs, he said.
