Louboutin offers a bag surprise, but shoes are still his main passion

When high-end retailer Barneys New York asked designer Christian Louboutin to choose his favourites from the range shoppers will find at the store this autumn, he added a handbag to the list, taking Barneys by surprise. “He over-delivered,” the retail company said.

The bag he picked was the Tiger-print Ponyhair Rougissime Clutch, which has a look in keeping with its name, at least on the outside, but on the inside it has an unusual, if very Louboutinesque touch. “There is a stripe of red enamel on the metal-bar closure,” Mr Louboutin said. “You can only see it once the bag is opened, so it is like a secret between me and the wearer.”

Christian Louboutin will always be more famous for his shoe designs, but this is far from a disappointment to him. On revealing the names of his ten favourite autumn 2014 styles, he told Barneys: “A woman tells a story with her clothes, but it’s the shoe that carries her. With a high heel, it’s all about the body language. The heel changes the posture, and there is a new perception.”
