Elche may set up free zone for footwear stores

The local authorities in Elche, Spain’s most important footwear-manufacturing city, have said they are examining the possibility of setting up a free zone in the centre of the town for footwear brands to sell shoes in a duty-free environment.

Elche’s mayor, Mercedes Alonso, has said she has a list of around 15 footwear brands that are interested in the idea. She added that the initiative would help promote Elche internationally as “Shoe City”, and also breathe new life into commercial areas in the town centre, where she said a large number of empty retail spaces gave a negative impression.
