The Spanish autonomous community of La Rioja has bestowed the 2014 La Rioja Medal on the region’s footwear industry President of the regional government, Pedro Sanz, presented the medal to local footwear industry leader Basilio García at a ceremony in mid-June.

La Rioja’s government awards the honour to one or two individuals each year in recognition of work they have done to promote the interests of the community.

The region had 129 footwear firms operating within its boundaries in 2013, 4% more than in 2012, giving it a 9% share of the whole Spanish footwear production landscape. It employs 2,728 people who, collectively, produce 12.8 million pairs of shoes per year.

On receiving the medal on the industry’s behalf, Basilio García paid tribute to the many generations of local people who have made shoes for a living, building up a level of know-how that has helped the industry there become what it is today.
